  • Food Safety and Nutrition Information
    This site from the International Food Information Council contains a wide variety of information about nutrition, food safety, additives, allergies, and food biotechnology. The IFIC guides are written for laypersons, and while in the main they are a source of good information, they take a definitely pro-industry stance and tend to gloss over areas of nutritional or food safety debate: for instance, they argue that monosodium glutamate is a perfectly safe food additive.
  • OnHealth - This online newsletter provides an abundant amount of information on numerous topics in medicine; the content is appropriate for both the layperson and the health professional. Subscription is not required to view the online information.
  • Health World Online - The HealthWorld Online site is easy to use, and quite informational. This information is provided in the fields of nutrition, fitness, medical self-care, wellness, natural health and alternative and complementary medicine. Free services include free Medline, Today's Healthy News (Daily health newsfeed), global health calendar, professional referral network, discussion forums, speaker's network, and a Healthy Update electronic newsletter. This site would be useful to those individuals interested in alternative medicine and wellness approaches to health care.
  • America's HouseCall Network - You can get advice from American Academy of Family Physicians and links to over 100 agencies, communitiy chat groups, and physician-moderated chats. The link to HouseCall Network Librarian can help you find what you are looking for quickly.
  • HIV Insite - This comprehensive guide gives state-by-state information on community and research resources. It also includes epidemiologic and drug treatment databases, conference announcements, up-to-date treatment guidelines, and literature resources.
  • OncoLink - This phenomenal site from the University of Pennsylvania provides a wide range of information about cancer diagnosis, treatment, prevention and research. It includes information about conferences and clinical trials.
  • Arthritis Foundation - This website provides links to educational materials, current research articles and research grant descriptions. The home page is also linked to the foundation's popular publication, Arthritis Today. The indices recent issues are available for browsing and subscription information is provided. The foundation also provides links to arthritis information in Spanish.
  • Go Ask Alice! - Go Ask Alice! is an interactive question and answer service. Alice answers questions each week about health, generally submitted by students of Columbia University. The topics covered include sexuality, sexual health, relationships, general health, fitness/nutrition, emotional well-being, and alcohol/drugs.
  • SleepNet - Everything you ever wanted to know about sleep disorders but were too tired to ask!
  • Quackwatch - This site is dedicated to educating the public about medical quackery. It includes articles on common health scams, bogus treatments, fads, and unethical behaviors. You may not agree with everything Dr. Barrett has to say, but this site is thoughtful, thought-provoking, and an excellent counter to all the dubious "alternative medicine" sites that have proliferated on the Web.
