Sr. Manager R&D (Synthetic Biology)

Responsibilities and Functions:

The Sr. R&D Manager will report into the head of GME R&D and will initially lead up to 3-4 scientists. He/she will:

Execute on the GME roadmap. Have a clear understanding of the latest developments and trends in the field and use this information to drive strategy development and implementation. Build and lead a cross functional team aimed toward development of leading edge cell engineering technology solutions to serve our customers. Lead the team to work effectively in a matrix environment. Effectively manage matrix project teams composed of scientists outside of your direct reporting structure. Mentor and develop team members. Identify and collaborate with knowledge leaders to extend our presence and R&D impact. Reach out to and visit customers to understand market needs and identify trends which we will be able to address. Present data at various conferences and customer visits. Work with the R&D team to publish data in peer reviewed journals. Evaluate existing patent landscapes and develop new intellectual property in the Cell Engineering space

Attributes of the successful candidate:

Solid scientific background including a strong publication history in the life sciences Excellent communication skills including written and public presentation Self-motivated Track record of successful and timely execution. Builds and maintains relationships with customers, key opinion leaders and industrial partners Interacts positively with all cross-functional development team members Demonstrated understanding of company’s external customer needs and how they affect business unit products and services Able to generate alternative solutions and manage risk by identifying criteria for trade-off decisions and helping to facilitate difficult conversations. Works within a diverse team and contribute to a positive work environment. Willingness to be flexible and adaptable in a complex, matrixed environment. Able to adapt to changing needs and parameters caused by time, budget, or other constraints. Acts as a mentor/role model for team members. Communicates effectively internally and also with decision makers, external scientists and customers.

Requirements / Education:

A life sciences Ph.D. is required plus 10 years industrial experience Proven success in leading teams which have successfully launched cell engineering tools into the research space Proven success in leading highly functional scientific teams of diverse skill sets Demonstrated expertise in interpreting and developing intellectual property in life sciences.
