Sr Director, External Scientific Innovation
In line with the unit search strategy, identify potential emerging opportunities,in-licensing prospects, and partnerships, typically within a geographic region,within one or more therapeutic areas of interest.
Identify emerging scientific trends in one or more therapeutic areas, evaluate the direction of the trend and suitability/maturity for drug development, and identify the key pathways and targets to pursue.
Provide scientific evaluation of external opportunities in one or more therapeutic areas of expertise; lead an initial evaluation, interfacing with cross functional lines as needed and identify the most promising to pursue further.The initial evaluations will include the underlying scientific rationale, the quality of the program, and the translational plan for early clinical development.
As part of a formal due diligence team, provide in-depth scientific evaluation of programs; provide a critical assessment of programs to senior leaders.
Member of one or more cross functional, therapeutically aligned evaluation teams to establish areas of strategic focus and triage and advance a portfolio of opportunities.
Partner with Business Development colleagues to coordinate activities and transact partnerships.
Participate in joint steering committees of partnerships or lead external collaborations.
May participate as a member of an internal development team.
Externally network with the larger scientific and partnering community; represent the organization externally as required with potential partners and at business or technical meetings.
Ensuring proper legal agreements are put in place and compliance standards are met.
Qualifications and Experience
M.D./Ph.D., with and an understanding of both drug discovery and exploratory development in one or more therapeutic areas of interest.
Minimum of 12 years of professional work experience that include drug discovery experience and either exploratory development experience or clinical practice.
Demonstrated experience in evaluating the science of a project and relevance to human disease is essential, ideally with experience with more than one modality (e.g. small and large molecules) and/or routes of delivery.
Exposure to business development activities including various partnership structures and the interpretation of contracts and agreements is a plus.
