A

A Chemical Reaction is a process in which the bonds are broken within reactant molecules, and new bonds are formed within product molecules in order to form a new substance.

There are 6 main types of chemical reactions:

  • Combustion Reaction - A reaction with a combustible material with an oxidizer to give an oxidized product. For example: CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O.
  • Decomposition Reaction - A reaction in which a single reactant breaks down into multiple products. For example: NaCl → Na + Cl.
  • Neutralization Reaction - A reaction between an acid and a base giving salt and water as the products. For example: HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O.
  • Redox (REDuction-OXidation) Reaction - A reaction in which there is a transfer of electrons between chemical species. For example: Zn + 2H+ → Zn2+ + H2.
  • Precipitation, Double-Displacement Reaction, Double-Decomposition Reaction - A reaction in which two compounds react and consequently, their anions and cations switch places forming two new products. For example: AgNO3 + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO3.
  • Synthesis Reaction - A reaction in which multiple simple compounds combine under certain physical conditions giving out a complex product. For example: 2Na + Cl2 → 2NaCl.
