Q

What Is Atomic Bond?

✍: FYIcenter.com

A

Atomic Bond is a physical process that ties atoms together to form a molecule.

There are 3 primary types of atomic bonds that involve the outer electrons of atoms.

  • Ionic Bond - Electrons can be transferred from one atom to another. For example, Sodium (Na) atom transfers one electron to Chlorine (Cl) atom to form an Ionic Bond for Salt (NaCl) molecule.
  • Covalent Bond - Two atoms share pairs of outermost electrons with each other. For example, 2 Oxygen atoms shares a pair of electrons to form Dioxygen molecule.
  • Metallic Bond - Electrons are freely float around and shared by all atoms in a material.
